What Happened? No Way Can I Be 60!

So, all of a sudden I looked at the clock and noticed that I was no longer 25.  It seemed like yesterday that the only people I knew that were 60 years old were friend of my parents.  How the hell did this happen?   I must pinch myself because it has to be a dream.

Once reality sunk in that it was not a dream, and that this year I really was turning 60, I decided I needed to do something to commemorate the tragedy.  I thought about joining AARP, and decided that the discounts were not worth all the junk mail, so I kept looking.

I looked into a few assisted care facilities and did not really like the menu or the group activities.  Can you imagine a community that doesn’t have running long distances at night on the beach as a social acitivity?  So, I kept looking…

I looked into Meals on Wheels…and bought a new mountain bike instead.

Then I found it.  Right in my own backyard (so to speak).  The Ghost Train.  A 60-mile Ultra-marathon that was in Brookline, New Hampshire.  This was in February, but when I went to register, they were “sold out”.  I was bummed out, put my name on the wait list, and went searching for the meaning of life at 60.

I went about my regular routine.  Ran my marathon in Rio in June and spent a wonderful summer in New England.

Then about 6 weeks ago I got the word.  I was at the top of the Ghost Train list.

Now, it would have been nice to have had some more time to train for this, but what the heck?  Why not?  I am only 60 once in a lifetime, so I jumped on the training bandwagon and started long runs again, multiple runs a day, and running at night with the headlamp.

So, I am not as ready as I would have liked, but I am off and on the Ghost Train! It starts at 9:00 AM on Saturday, October 21st and the cut off is 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 22nd.  Basically, 30 hours to go 60 miles.  I can be tracked by http:www.ultralive.net/gt100#tracking/info

I will let you all know how it goes later…
